Is there one best roof for the East Coast?

Choose roof details for the actual exposure. Ice-dam control begins with the building enclosure; hurricane resilience depends on the whole load path and water-shedding assembly; coastal metal compatibility matters; and local adoption controls code requirements.

Three corridors

One coast, three different detailing problems.

The corridor you build in changes which detail carries the roof. The covering is usually the least of it.

Northeast

What dominates
Cold, snow load, freeze–thaw cycling, and a large share of older housing stock.
What it changes
Ice-dam control starts with air sealing, insulation, and ventilation rather than with the covering. Eave, valley, and chimney detailing carries the rest, and shed snow has to land somewhere safe.

Mid-Atlantic

What dominates
A wide heating-and-cooling swing, wind-driven rain, mature trees, and low-slope additions over living space.
What it changes
Wall-to-roof and addition flashing does the work, drainage has to be kept clear of debris, and attic moisture rarely gets a season dry enough to reset.

Coastal Southeast

What dominates
Uplift, hurricane rain, salt, and sustained heat.
What it changes
The load path from deck attachment upward matters more than the covering, secondary water protection is the fallback when the covering is breached, metals and fasteners have to be corrosion-compatible, and vents are chosen for wind-driven rain.
