Choose synthetic slate as a specific roof system.

The composite roofing guide explains the broader category and its evidence. Here, the practical question is narrower: which slate-look system belongs on your building? A photograph can establish a style preference. It cannot identify the product formulation, fastening arrangement, or repair options behind the photograph.

Request the manufacturer, product line, profile, color blend and installation-document revision in the proposal. Keep those details with the final invoice and spare-material inventory. A brand name alone is incomplete if that manufacturer sells several profiles or changes its product line.

Look at a completed project from roughly your own viewing distance. Compare the butt thickness, repetition of surface patterns, color distribution, ridge shape and treatment at valleys and roof edges. A hand sample is useful for texture; a sample panel with several courses is better for the overall pattern. Ask whether the proposed blend and exposure match the reference roof.

Check the existing deck as part of the scope. Westlake’s DaVinci FAQ says its tiles need a flat surface and may accentuate deck imperfections. It also discusses snow shedding and snow retention where sliding snow could reach people or property. These are useful questions for that product, rather than assumptions to transfer to every synthetic roof. Read the manufacturer’s explanation.

Ask for pounds per square foot of completed roof, including the selected exposure and required layers. One roofing square is 100 square feet. A carton weight without its installed coverage does not give you the roof load. Replacing existing material also changes the calculation: the relevant comparison includes what is removed and what is added.

Use the roof’s sloped surface area for covering quantities. Building capacity also depends on framing, condition and other loads; a lighter covering does not establish that the existing structure is sound.

Make three separate requests: the applicable evaluation or listing, examples of older installations of this product, and the complete warranty. Ask which assembly was tested and whether it matches the proposed deck, underlayment and attachment. Ask when the reference roofs were installed and whether their product is the same version sold today. Those questions turn a broad longevity claim into information you can compare.

A cool-roof rating addresses solar reflectance and thermal emittance. The CRRC program distinguishes initial and aged measurements. Those measurements do not establish leak resistance, hail performance or a service-life guarantee.

For the warranty, record the covered defect, remedy, labor contribution, exclusions, transfer process and notice deadlines. Compare the actual documents rather than the word “lifetime.” Ask who pays to expose flashing, remove damaged units and install replacements if a material claim is accepted.

Have the installer identify how an individual unit is replaced and which accessories need matching parts. Ask whether spare units from the same blend can be retained, where they should be stored, and who can service the roof later. Keep closeout photographs of valleys, penetrations and attachment details taken during installation.
